Opening Ceremony: on The Moment

This week’s guest bloggers at The Moment are Carol Lim and Humberto Leon, the co-founders of the downtown boutique Opening Ceremony. Leon and Lim, former luxury retail executives who met as students at University California Berekely in 1993, have opened shops in both New York and Los Angeles. The store’s eclectic edit of labels — a mix of young and established designers, including the boutique’s eponymous line — started as a retail take on the Olympics, pairing U.S. designers with 15 international offerings for a competition of sales. Lim and Leon’s global approach to fashion has widened the international influence of designers from Sweden, Brazil, Germany, and Hong Kong. In September, their focus will turn to Japan.

Opening Ceremony has a lot going on this week, with their events surrounding theOlympics, so it's as good a week as any to get look inside look into the minds behind the boutique and brand.

The Sartorialist for the GAP

Anyone who has picked up this months Vanity Fair has seen a very nice series of ads from the GAP. The brand is really trying hard to turn around their dwindling business and although they still have some work to do, from the looks from the ads, they are on their way. One of the most surprising 'celebrities' featured is none other than The Sartorialist , Scott Schuman. He is very much looking like he didn't get styled by a heavy handed stylist which was very smart on the GAP's part, as it showed how GAP clothing can fit many different personal styles.

Vanity Fair’s International Best-Dressed List

This months Vanity Fair’ is out with their annual International Best-Dressed List. Some of people of interest to the likes that visit this site are Kanye West, Brad Pitt, Julian Schnabel, Karl Lagerfeld, and Lapo Elkann. But there is a lot more to enjoy in this year’s line-up, much of it between the lines.

The Death of Skinny (Jeans)

Could it be already? Are we moving off the skinny bottoms (and slim, straight cut for most of us) back to "Hammer" pants. Signs of the swing of the pendulum are apparent. The market seems to be moving slowly in that direction.

Refinery29 thinks so as well, as they tell it, "Belts, paper-bag waists, lots of pleats and volume, and a few cuffs at the hem create a surprisingly flattering, almost forties silhouette" and " when it's 90 degrees outside, who wouldn't choose cool and loose over suffocation? Via Refiner29.com

100 Pieces of Havana

There is an exhibit currently running at the Truman Brewery is London featuring a slewof artists' work inspired by the sponsor, Havana Club Especial's, bottle. '100 Pieces of Havana' is a one-off exhibition showcasing some of today's finest artistic talent. The inspiration for this project is the Havana Club Especial bottle, and the artists have interpreted the bottle in any way they like.

There are some notable names participating including, Kai and Sunny (pictured above), of the apparel label Call of the Wild, Dave White, Gasius, Jun Watanabe, I Have Pop?, She One, INSA, and Aesthetic Apparatus.

Short Summer

As the summer is coming to an end (I know, very sad, but true), I wanted to take one last look at some summer shorts we have. A more tailored short has become in vogue this summer and we have two great examples pictured above. What's great about these shorts are the cut and the ability to roll them up to get the desired length you like. Because shorter shorts are also very much in trend this year, so its great to have the versitility, as not everyone can wear their shorts at the same length. Pictured above left is the Wood Wood Sjakal in White (was $150), now $68. Pictured above right is the John Patrick Organic Cotton Drill Short in Navy (was $132), now $66. "Suit Yourself" VMAN Preview

VMAN has just released a preview of their next issue, VMAN 11, and by the looks of this preview editorial, 'Suit Yourself,' it is going to be incredible. Reflecting V Magazine's 'The Women' editorial, which took rich photography and a classic country manor to project an image of high-society living, this editorial tells a nostalgic story of traditional tailoring with almost grainy photography used to stunning effects.

The photography is by David Sherry and the story is styled by Jay Massacret. VMAN introduces the editorial with "this year's fall suits combine elegant fine tailoring, clean lines, and a whiff of smoky nostalgia." A perfect introduction to a perfect editorial. Via Brandish.tv

The Satorialist doesn't like my style!

I was in Soho yesterday and saw Scott Schuman, aka the Satorialist, and he didn't take a photo. I'm beginning to think he doesn't like me.

It was hot as hell in NY yesterday, so as I often get in the summer months I was in full on relaxed prep style. I had on a blue Engineered Garments oxford with white contrast stitching, slim fit J.Crew khaki chinos, white leather Chuck Taylor looking VisVims, and white Super sunglasses (I know, very cliche, but I got them as a gift from the good people at BPMW/Capsule).

As I past he took a double take but no photo request. I cried myself to sleep last night.

Plaid Men in August's GQ

Before I can even pick up the issue, A Continuous Lean has scans of another nice feature in August's GQ. This month they hit you with Mr. John Slattery AKA Roger Sterling, of critically acclaimed television show, Mad Men, cloaked head-to-toe in plaid suiting. It makes me wish I had more occasions to wear a suit. Check out ACL for all the photos.
